& Just Like That...We Have A 1 Year Old!

Updated: Apr 30, 2019

So Vincy’s party was a joint affair with his “twin” cousin Serayah. Serayah is my cousin Keisha’s daughter and we both delivered our babies on March 16, 2018. Serayah was born in the morning and Vincent the evening. They would have both been born in the morning but that’s a story for another post. Funny enough, my father and Keisha’s mother are twins!

We threw these kiddies a Mickey and Minnie Mouse themed party. It was held at our apartment in Jersey and was all family and framily. As I mentioned in my intro, my background is Jamaican and Guyanese. This cousin is from the Guyanese side of family so we had tonss of great food prepared by my aunts. From my Auntie Claire’s famous fried rice, rice and peas, to roti, macaroni pie, bbq chicken and curry chicken. My sister wife Brit also catered (one of Vincy’s god mommys) and provided this amazing shrimp Rasta pasta, buttermilk fried chicken and baked macaroni (you can NEVER have enough) Vincy tore that mac and cheese right up! We also had pigs in a blanket from Vincy’s god mommy Crys and my aunties also made cheese rolls and pholourie.

The food was great and we had a large array of drinks provided by godparents and my dad.

There was tons of candy (entirely too much!) and dope party bags for the kiddies. There were bags for infants and toddlers, complete with applesauce, Gerber puff snacks, Gerber cheese doodles and cute toys like small soft balls and noise makers. For the older kids there were chips, slimes, candy and small trinkets that took me back to my childhood birthday party memories. Each bag had a label that said Vincent and Serayah’s name along with the party date and a white bow, done by Keisha and her sister Onesha.

We had customized M&M’s for the adults with the babies names, Happy Birthday and the party date. These were in red, yellow and white. The m&m’s were put into these really cute patterned boxes Keisha found. The boxes were red and white as well as black and white.

As for the decor, we bought items from Walmart, Party City and Amazon. There were banners and Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears for the kids to take home. We had Mickey and Minnie glider balloons, a beautiful banner that was bought on Amazon and customized by my good friends Darnell & Raven. Raven was the brains behind the creative execution of our decorations and Darnell helped bring it all to life. I truly appreciated that help because of course nothing that day went totally according to plan and I was delayed in getting the decor up and going.

We had a photo wall that had a backdrop purchased at party city as well as props, however we never actually used it for the party lol. Vincent and Serayah had their 1st birthday photo shoot using the wall and that was that.

As for the cakes, Vincent’s was a chocolate and yellow cake purchased at BJ’s along with some mini cupcakes. Keisha baked chocolate and yellow cupcakes with Minnie accents on top. Serayah also had an ice cream Minnie Mouse cake.

Things were kept relatively simple for their first birthday. However, with a family as large as ours, simple and small never actually ends up being truly simple and small loll. The night was filled with good vibes, children playing and music mixed by Andy. Everyone, friends and family helped in making the night a success If I could change anything, it would have been to have a larger space but overall, I think we did pretty good for planning our first kids party!
